We flew to the Maldives direct with TUI to Male International Airport. From here we took a short seaplane journey to Vilamendhoo. The plane journey itself was fantastic. Flying over all of the tiny islands with turquoise waters, we couldn’t wait to get to our final destination.
The reason we has chosen Vilamendhoo was because it was situated in the South Ari Atoll – known for its vibrant and plentiful marine life. We had thought the marine life in Fiji was amazing, but apparently this island would knock our socks off – we would soon see!
On arrival the seaplane takes you to a little platform close to the island. From here you board a boat and make your way to the island itself. A welcoming smile from the friendly staff, along with a cocktail, while the check in was taken care of was a great start to this holiday. We were shown to our accommodation, a watervilla, however the island offers a wide range of other villas if a water villa doesn’t take your fancy. The watervilla was beautiful. Simple but modern decoration with an incredible view out to the reef. Sunbeds were on the private sundeck with steps leading down and out into the reef. Out the back of the villa, there was another private sundeck which housed more sunbeds along with a jacuzzi. We were in paradise.

It didn’t take us long before we were in the water and exploring the reef. It was incredible – the best we have ever seen! Full of parrot fish, trigger fish, reef sharks, turtles to name a few. We had only been here a few hours and already blown away by what the reef had to offer. Later we discovered the area closer to shore was a lagoon for baby black tip reef sharks, no bigger than about 60cm. You could see them schooling the fish together – and if brave enough, you could go in the water with them to observe their behaviour.
We had gone on an All Inclusive package, which was great. Included in this we were given various ‘bonus’ items including a sunset cruise, hire of the kayaks etc.
We also opted to book ourselves on (at additional cost) whale shark and manta ray excursions. These would take you out to various points in the South Ari Atoll to give you a chance to see these magnificent creatures. While the whale shark may have eluded us, the manta rays were out in force – truly a spectacular sight to behold.
