Nestled between Italy, Austria, Hungary, and Croatia, Slovenia is a country that often gets overlooked by travellers. However, those who do visit are rewarded with breathtaking scenery, rich cultural heritage, and warm hospitality. From the majestic Julian Alps to the turquoise waters of Lake Bled, Slovenia is a paradise for those who love adventure.
The capital city of Slovenia, Ljubljana, is a vibrant blend of old-world charm and modern sophistication. Here you can explore the cobbled streets of the Old Town, visit the iconic Ljubljana Castle with it’s great views across the city and enjoy a meal or drink on the lively riverside promenade. With multiple markets and festivals being held year-round, you can sample local delicacies and mingle with the friendly locals.
Making Ljubljana the base for the holiday allowed us to explore the surrounding areas, including neighbouring countries! Our first excursion was a full day trip which took in Trieste in Italy, Piran in Slovenia and Grožnjan in Croatia. Information on time in Trieste and Grožnjan can be found under their own tabs.
Piran is a picturesque seaside town perched on a peninsula, Piran offers a blend of Venetian and Austro-Hungarian influences. Here you are able to stroll along the charming waterfront, visit the historic Tartini Square and savour the fresh seafood.
We also explored Predjama Castle which features a real snake protecting the antiques! This stunning castle is set halfway up a vertical cliff face and is listed by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest cave castle. From here we went on to Postojna Caves, a massive underground wonder featuring stunning stalactites and stalagmites.

Vintgar Gorge was also one of my favourite spots. A 1.6 km long gorge located in Triglav National Park. Boardwalks crisscross their way along the Radovna River, a crystal-clear river that looks emerald green in certain light.
No trip to Slovenia is complete without a visit to Lake Bled. This postcard-perfect destination is famous for its picturesque island with church, medieval castle perched on a cliff and stunning mountain backdrop. We took a traditional Pletna boat ride to the island, hiked around the lake paths and sampled the famous Lake Bled cream cake!
Close by is the less famous Lake Bohinj. This offered a much more tranquil, less touristy and more beautiful surroundings. Final stop of the day was to Škofja Loka, one of the well preserved medieval towns of Slovenia.
Our final adventures took us to Lake Jasna – easily my favourite of the 3 lakes. We then took the Vršič mountain pass with it’s incredible views of the Julian Alps and on to the Soča river which boasts beautiful valleys and gorges with emerald waters. Finally, we took the Redal Mountain Pass and on to Zelenci Reserve.

With its unique blend of Mediterranean and Alpine influences, Slovenia is an excellent destination. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a cultural immersion, this enchanting country will leave an unforgettable impression on you.
